Wihan Victor recorded the highest score of the competition as University of Free State made it two bonus point wins from two on the second day of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) A Week being played in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The right-hander struck 135 off 134 balls (16 fours, 3 sixes) as Kovsies crushed Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) with what was also the biggest win of the tournament – the students from Bloemfontein winning by a massive 278 runs.

Phillip Visser chipped in with 72 for the winning side, while Duan Jansen claimed five for 19 to leave TUT all out for a paltry 40 in response.

That result left UFS top of Section B Pool B, where there was also a second consecutive bonus-point victory for University of Fort Hare (UFH) as they thumped University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) by 126 runs

This was thanks to half-centuries from Mkhululi Calana (79) and Jerome Bossr (64) as well as three-fors for Sekela Ngadulela (3/24) and Thabang Sqoko (3/31) in a clash that saw 258 for six play 132.

In Pool A of the same section, meanwhile, there were bonus-point wins for hosts University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and Nelson Mandela University George (Madibaz).

Matthew Lovatt claimed a tidy four for 10 turning out for the former against Rhodes University (RU), while the star for the latter was Sean Callaghan with 31 in a low-scoring chase against North West University (Vaal).

Elsewhere, Anele Ngcwabe (4/35) and Timothy Whitehead (3/23) shared seven wickets to help University of Stellenbosch (Maties) demolish Central University of Technology (CUT) by 10 wickets in a match that saw the Cape side roll over their Free State opponents for a lowly 70.

That put the former top of Section A Pool B, with University of Western Cape (UWC) following them after they beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) in one of the most closely fought contests of the week to date.

Batting first, the Gauteng side posted 203 for eight, before unbeaten 40s by Givon Christians (49) and Keane Solomons (47) took their Cape opponents to the win with less than three overs to spare.

Finally, in Pool A, North West University (Pukke) and University of Pretoria (Assupol Tuks) won their games comfortably to top their section.

Lesego Senokwane (51), Lourens Steenkamp (64), Ruan Haasbroek (59) and Louis van Schalkwyk (62 not out) all hit half-centuries that took Pukke to a 294 for five against University of Cape Town (UCT).

Senokwane then completed a superb all-round display with three for nine to send the opposition tumbling for 150 in a 144-run triumph.

And 55 not out by Sean Gilson helped Tuks down Nelson Mandela University (Madibaz) by four wickets with Neil Brand nabbing three for 11.
