It is with a heavy heart that the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) have learnt of the passing of Rob Collins. Rob was an inspirational leader, great visionary and tremendous fan of Central Gauteng Lions and will most certainly be sorely missed by the Lions family.

Rob was the man behind the hugely successful long-term partnership between Sun International and Lions Cricket. He too was instrumental in kickstarting the SunZone area at Imperial Wanderers Stadium and working hand in hand with the marketing team to create exceptional experiences for fans from far and wide.

Rob then went on to sign Sun International as an associate lifestyle partner to the CGL and brought with him a team that added incredible pizazz and finesse into the spectator experience.

Central Gauteng Lions CEO Jono Leaf-Wright said;

“I unfortunately never had the pleasure of dealing with Rob, however I know from so many of our staff that we owe him a great deal: The match day fan experience is forever enriched because of him. The way in which he has partnered with us for many years now is indicative of a man who was true to his word, a team player.”

Former Central Gauteng Lions Head of Marketing and Communications, Andra Nel recalls her time with Rob at the Union;

“Rob became a dear friend for so many of us at Lions. He took time to mentor the players and the management team. In a personal capacity, I could spend hours listening to his adventures and life lessons. He lived a full life and had a meaningful impact on those around him and he most certainly will be missed. I will forever treasure how we together brought some of our wildest dreams to life.”

“When I started my tenure with the Lions family, our former CGL CEO Greg Fredericks instructed me to go and meet Sun International and specifically Rob Collins. We met at their Maslow Hotel together with few other Sun International colleagues, boy oh boy, a meeting scheduled to last an hour lasted three hours with Rob unravelling his insights about various topics – business strategy, VAT, hospitality, fan engagement, value creation and many other areas. I understood then why Greg insisted that I met the Sun International team. The relationship between the two organisations has been phenomenal and keeps growing from strength to strength and thanks to Rob’s legacy. I also had a pleasure of engaging with him while he was a partner to Relative Media our billboard partner and again, Rob took centre stage. The Lions family is indeed saddened by his passing and will miss your disruptor thinking approach” concludes Head of CGL Marketing, Commercial and Communications Wanele Mngomezulu
