Ncedo Tywaku and Lorenzo Bailey starred for Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Juan Mpofu for Sol Plaatje University as both teams finished the University Sport South Africa (USSA) B Week in Vanderbijlpark unbeaten after double wins on the final day on Friday.

The 11-team event has been taking place in a 20-over format all week at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), with CPUT and SPU the stand-out teams.

Both won their previous four matches in their respective groups heading into day four and they made it six matches without defeat at the conclusion of the event.

It meant that CPUT ended top of Pool A, with their latest victims being Durban University of Technology (DUT) and University of Zululand (UZ).

Tywaku was their standout player against the former, striking an unbeaten 51 off 39 balls (2 fours, 1 six) in an 18-run win – the scores being 134 for six versus 116 for eight – with Bailey then shining against the latter with his innings of 58 (48 balls, 7 fours).

The result took CPUT to a total of 28 points, meaning four of their victories also came with a bonus point.

That exact tally was matched by SPU in Pool B after they beat Walter Sisulu University (WSU) by six runs and then overcame Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) by six wickets.

In the first game, Mpofu ran out the opposition top-scorer Tom Anathi for 36 and also claimed three for 20 as SPU defended their modest 108 for seven by restricting the opposition to 102 for nine.

Mpofu then bludgeoned seven sixes and six fours in a smashing 88 off 48 balls to help his team chase down a strong 143 target set by MUT with nearly five overs to spare.

Mason Zacharia (3/8) and Brendon Davids (3/23) claimed three wickets each in that game for SPU.

Elsewhere on the final day, Inga Ntsizi claimed four for 16 to help WSU beat University of Venda (UV) by 27 runs.

Sphelele Nzuza of MUT also made merry against UV by taking three for 11 in a nine-wicket win.

Huzefa Yasir Patel delivered the spell of the day for University of Limpopo (UL), nabbing five for 11 in an eight-wicket win over UZ.

However, UL lost their other game when they went down by five wickets to DUT, Nishein Singh (36) and Tholinhlanhla Zungu (32 not out) hitting 30s in a chase of 103.

Finally, Kabelo Thobakgale starred with 45 and two for 24 as VUT ousted Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) by 25 runs.
