With heavy rains falling in the northern parts of the country, the action continues to come through thick and fast in the Eastern Cape, as Ryan Maritz and Talha Chavoos helped the Central Gauteng Lions continue their dominance at the Momentum under-15 Boys Week in East London.

During the first of two rounds of 50-over matches this week, the pair shone with bat and ball, respectively, to seal a mammoth 169-run victory against Western Province, their fifth win of the tournament. Easterns lost their first match of the Week when they went down to a talented KwaZulu-Natal Inland side, while North West and Boland had successful outings against Northerns and Free State.

Maritz recorded the only century of the day, dispatching eight fours on his way to 100 runs off 121 balls and helped his side, along with Reuben du Toit (70 off 80 balls; 8 fours. 1 six), to a commanding total of 261/6 after being put to bat by WP.

With the ball, it was Chavoos’ turn to star for Gauteng, as the right-arm fast bowler notched up a five-wicket haul for 20 runs in his 10 overs, leading the charge as their opponents from Cape Town were bowled out for 92.

In a low-scoring affair, Easterns came unstuck for the first time this Week in their clash against a buoyed KZN Inland side who claimed their third win on the bounce after their four-wicket triumph. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, the Benoni-based side struggled to find their rhythm at the crease and was restricted to 135 all out by a well-oiled Inland bowling attack led by Olwethu Kweyama’s figures of three for nine.

The team from the KZN Midlands then took 34.2 overs to chase down their target with Matthew Urquhart seeing them over the line thanks to an unbeaten 41 off 42 balls.

North West overpowered Northerns in similar fashion in their One-Day encounter, when they claimed a two-wicket win, thanks in main to a brilliant bowling effort and a wagging tail, to earn their fourth success of the campaign. Northerns were dismissed cheaply for 132 in 38.5 overs after Cornelius Prinsloo took three for 34 in his 10 overs before a 35-ball 46 from MJ Mostert and a late cameo from Salmaan Shabbir (23) helped them chase it down with 17.1 overs remaining.

Dewald Grove continued his superb form at the crease for Boland in their convincing 83-run triumph against Free State. The top-order batsman banked another half-century (58 off 88 balls; 6 fours) to propel his team to 205/6, with Haydar Khan then taking four wickets for 20 runs to help remove Free State for just 122 in their reply.

In the other matches on Day 4 of the Momentum U15 Week, Northern Cape defeated South Western Districts by 14 runs, while Eastern Province and Mpumalanga both claimed impressive seven-wicket wins against KZN Coastal and Border respectively.

Scorecards from Day 4 can be located on, with Day 5 of the Momentum U15 Boys Week resuming on Monday, 09 December with another day of 50-over cricket.
