STEPPING UP FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS – The 2020 Pink Walk
In full celebration of the country’s most loved cricket match, the Pink Day celebrations officially kick off on Friday 31 January 2020 in the form of the Pink Walk – a 3km walk around the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH). The Breast Care Clinic is the beneficiary of the 9 February match at the famous Imperial Wanderers Stadium where SA’s Protea’s will tackle ICC Cricket World Cup champions and ICC World No. 1 ranked team England.
The 3rd Momentum One Day International, more commonly known as Pink Day, is held in aid of breast cancer awareness with funds raised allocated towards breast cancer research. The Pink Walk is just one of many #PitchUpInPink activations hosted by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) since the 2020 campaign launched in October 2019.
Post the walk, guests will be welcomed to a tour of the breast care clinic in an effort to educate all on the devastating effects of breast cancer. The Breast Care facility at CMJAH is considered a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in the breast care field and the unit diagnoses more than 350 new breast cancer cases every year.
“Early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer breeds a far higher chance of a positive outcome,” says Jono Leaf-Wright, CEO of Central Gauteng Lions. “Our aim is to contribute towards a quicker diagnosis – through awareness and education – as breast cancer affects not only the patient, but their entire family unit as well. I want the colour pink to remind people to get tested and hopefully detected early enough to make a full recovery: That’s our goal.”
The next #PitchUpInPink event on the calendar prior to Pink Day is the Pink Golf Day taking place on 5 February at Country Club Johannesburg Woodmead.
